Kalamalka Lake

Kalamalka Lake, or more commonly known as Kal Lake, is a beautiful glacial lake in the Okanagan with vibrant blue/blue-green colours. In fact, the shifting colours are caused from light hitting calcium carbonate in the water and have landed the lake the name “the lake of a thousand colours.”

The lake holds years’ worth of memories of long summer days spent with friends and family, eating good food, reading books, playing games, and going for swims. My parents often refer to Vernon as their happy place, and Kal Lake is part of the reason. One of my favourite parts of the lake is how far out into the water you can walk before it drops off, making it a great place for kids to hangout.

In recent years, we have tried paddleboarding while out on the water. Across the street from the beach, there are a few shops, including Kalamalka General Store and Kalavida Surf Shop, where you can purchase beach wear and paddleboarding gear, as well as rent paddleboards, bikes, and sign up for paddleboard lessons. The surf shop also holds the Kalamalka Classic Festival annually at the end of the summer, which is a multi-day paddleboard event with a variety of different races for all age groups. Unfortunately, we weren’t in town for the festival, but someday I hope to plan a vacation at the end of August and take in the fun.
